During the Yom Kippur War, 1973, when Israel had its back to the Mediterranean Sea and overrun in the North by the Syrians and in the South by the Egyptians it considered but did not use nuclear weapons and so took heavy casualities. This is a level of restraint that even the USA matched. At the end of WWII with Japan on its knees ,more than 10,000 miles from our mainland we made the decision to nuke Japan though they were no longer a threat in the Pacific and never were a threat to our mainland. The action our country took was generally considered acceptable as a way to reduce casualties of an invasion. Surely Israel would have been justified in using nuclear weapons against enemies that were right on their borders. If all the world held itself to this level of restraint iits inhabitants would never have to fear the use of nuclear weapons again.
