- & you don't need to be on the far left to see that. it's tragic as it wouldn't have cost anything to try to be more forthcoming towards the pals & make real negotiations possible. israel could still have retained a strong, unwavering position, not reducing any of its basic demands. the only cost would've been to clean up its own system internally, delineating a clear boundary vis a vis the settlers instead of letting them strengthen their grip on the rest of the country, increasingly as 'a state in a state'. now any trust /hope there still may've existed as to israel's willingness to a possible settlement w/the pals is being drained. for sure, nobody's gonna blame the pals for this break-down. it seems only an internal israeli crisis that ushers in new elections (giving livni a chance) could possibly turn the tide now. but it would take a battle & a national awakening to make a real change.
