    Israel went very public as they sought aid in gaining the release of Shalit. They pressed America, the EU, the Vatican, the Red Cross, the UN, a number of individual nations, and indivuduals such as Jimmy Carter The issue was in the Israeli media virtually every day for years. When none of this worked for Israel and Israel alone was seen to have the keys to Shalit's release, Israel had to act. Compare this to case about two years ago when an American serviceman was captured by the Taliban. This fact was reported in the media, and then nothing was ever heard about the issue ever again. I still do not know what happened to the guy. Israel paints themselves into a corner by playing the victim beacuse, if other nations see that Israel simply prefers that others carry their load, those other nations will not be inclined to help Israel under those or any other circumstances. Apparently Israelis believe that there is a lot of sympathy for Israel among the people of the world. Think again.
