My first inclination was to agree with Akiva Eldar that we, Israelis, are hypocrites. We are proud of our humanitarian efforts in Turkey, Armenia, and now Haiti. But what about the suffering of children in our own backyard? But on second thought, I think he is being unfair . I don't believe Israelis are callous by nature and under normal circumstances many Israelis would go out of their way to help the children of Gaza, and many do, such as Doctors Without Borders. But, I'm sorry, it is asking too much of us to be compassionate towards people who want us dead. I know we are talking about children - and children are innocent creatures - but we're only human, and years and years of suicide bombings, Kassams and Hamas declarations have made us callous towards the suffering of the other side, those we regard as our enemies. You'd have to be a saint to feel otherwise, and we are not saints. I wish it weren't like that but I think Akiva Eldar is overly judgmental of us.
