The 2002 Arab Peace Initiative was also an attempt to break the exclusive lock-hold Israel and the US have had and continue to have on peace negotiations with the Palestinians. The secret peace negotiation papers, leaked in 2008, confirmed this lock-hold and the significant imbalance that it brings to the negotiating table in favour of Israel. When you are negotiating from strength, the object is to reach a settlement that favours you and yours, but where negotiations concern states, boundaries and the other party's national self-determination, only fair settlements based on International Laws are sustainable in the long term. Israel was born out of national self-determination internationally agreed. It is not a new idea to the State of Israel. But if the strong party has no wish to progress, notwithstanding verbal assurances to the contrary, let alone conclude negotiations, then all words are empty of meaning and all actions better understood. Odysseus selfishly lashed himself to the mast and sailed close to the Sirens' island only once. Israel has been sailing around this metaphorical island for decades basking in the praise of the Sirens that is merely a reflection of its own hubris. But the rocks are real. In my analogy, I see Israel's body politic as Odysseus and the Israeli public as his crew, suitably deafened by bees' wax. And Odysseus unwilling to set a true course out of danger.
