Absent a massive transfer of the Arab population out of the territories, there is no demographic future for a "greater Israel". This war could have ended in 2000, but Arafat rejected a reasonable compromise. The Saudi intiative was an attempt by the larger Arab world to provide moral permission to the Palestinians to settle without a real "right of return". That was then, and this is now. The continued existence of this unnecessary conflict, by reason of both sides' inability to confront their own rejectionists, may last another generation or more. To what end?
