Mashaal, on a visit to Iran, says that Israel is a 'reality'? Palestine within the 1967 Hamas accepts Israel living within the pre-1967 borders, side-by-side with Palestine? With acceptable security guarantees this sounds much like Israel s position in the wake fo the Six Day War. With the exception of the Right of Return, sounds like a good start to explore possible negotiations over Final Status. Not that Hamas deserves to be trusted, yet. But a step forward, and definitely worth pursuing. Since winning the Bush-forced election, Hamas position was that it would offer a long-term Hudna, a truce lasting up to 50 years. Of course they made no secret that it was their expectation that internal strife would see the end of a Jewish state before that. But then, what was the likelihood that a Hamas government would be in power for 50 years? Israel could then sit patiently awaiting political maturity and a more peace-inclined Palestine with which to negotiate peace.
