It can either try to meet the Palestinians aspirations for a viable homeland of their own, willingly and with goodwill, or it can brace itself for a future of endless conflict. And at some pount down the line, in that future of endless conflict, there's a chance, however remote it seems at the moment, that it will be defeated in a conventional war, one in which all its territorial gains, laboriously put together, will be taken off it, messily and bloodily and in days. Does Israel feel lucky? Does Israel think it will be lucky forever?
