Having expelled the aggressor, the territories became a breeding ground for more attacks on the Jewish community of the country, inside the so called Green Line. The state of Israel is obligated, as all other states, to first and foremost protect its citizens, and if that protection means holding on to certain regions, so be it. This approach is very much in line with UN Security Council Resolution 242 on the basis of which all talks have been conducted. If the Arabs can't understand this or more likely refuse to understand it, they will continue to pay the price of tension and lack of peace...!!!
