A new poll reports that 54% of Israelis believe that Jews in the Diaspora have no right to tell Israel what to do. I sympathize with that, but I have something to say anyway: if Abbas has any real chance whatsoever of making progress against Hamas, if only by uniting moderate Palestinian opinion against it, or by maintaining a prevailing calm in the West Bank that allows progress between Israelis and Palestinians in that theater, then it is CRITICAL that Israel remain a sincere partner for him this time around. DO NOT SELL HIM OUT. While the Hamas takeover of Gaza was in some ways a major setback, we are also being presented with an opportunity for progress during this brief window when Hamas is discredited. Please make sincere efforts to bolster Abbas and Fatah. Do not sandbag him or betray him. If he confronts Hamas militarily, do not abandon him like you did the SLA in 2000. Learn from the past. Do the right thing!
