i agree entirely with Ari Shavit. I marched the length of the parade (leading one of the groups mentioned in the article!). I observed: Among the spectators, if you were under 50 years of age, you were identifiably 'Modern Orthodox'. If you were secular, you were probably over sixty, or even seventy. Add a few Israelis. Absent were very significant groups of the NY Jewish community. On the other hand, the enthusiasm and support for Israel by the groups marching - especially the schools (again, mainly M O) - was great! Special mention should be made of Yosef Mendelevitch, visiting from Israel, who made it his business to join several school groups at different times during the afternoon - the only rabbi and prominent Israeli visible at all .....
