PLO's Saeb Erekat says talks have ground to a halt due to Israel's rejection of Palestinian requests to resume full security duties in Area A.15:16 03.05.16 | 0 comments
Israeli hasbara is generally the opposite of the truth, so it does not take much to work out what Israel and its apologists are really saying. Israeli leaders have said repeatedly that the major Jewish West Bank settlements must be ceded to Israel, so whether the Palestinians agree or go to the UN will not change anything. Netanyahu has also ruled out the Green Line border as the border, saying it must be based on 'security considerations' - Israeli shorthand for the security barrier. So again, no alacrity or lack of on the Palestinians’ part will make any difference to Israel’s territorial ambitions. The E1 ring around East Jerusalem is already well advanced, all that is halting the final pieces of the settlement jigsaw being started is firm US opposition, which won’t be affected by what the Palestinians do or don’t do at the UN. It is precisely BECAUSE all three, as well as East Jerusalem, are already on Israel’s list of unyielding preconditions, that the Palestinians have no option BUT to go to the UN. As all these Israeli intentions expressly break international law and specific UN resolutions, it seems fair enough to go back to the UN and put the validity of them under the microscope. The UNGA’s best route would be to accept Palestine as a member, so giving it access to the ICC to put its case on Israeli breaches of the Geneva Conventions, that would get the UN out of the loop, circumvent the hopelessly biased USA and present Israel with a formidable obstacle and price to pay.
