It was dead clear that if Arabs and Muslims have a free choice then Islamists are theirs. It was proven and re-proven. In Palestine, if elections are free and fair then Abbas and his group would evaporate as did partis of fallen dictators. However, the Algerian and Palestinian precedents are too bloody to forget. In Algeria, the Generals took the rein of powers and decimated every oppositions, principally Islamists. France, US were intolerant and pushed for the crush. In Palestine, Abbas unsuccessfully tried a coup in Gaza to avenge PA defeat in election. Israel and Arab regimes blockaded Gaza since the election and later went to war to unseat Hamas. In Egypt, Islamists are careful not to antagonize the West, Israel and the military who are in power now. For the West and Israel, the peace treaty is the most important matter for now. But, the ME would not go away unless justice is done to Palestinians.
