I disagree that Israel is the main source of tensions in the middle east. Since Israel's founding Egypt has been at war with Yemen, Egypt skirmished with Lybia and Sudan for decades, Yemen had a civil war, Iraq invaded Iran, Iraq invaded Kuwait, Syria invaded Jordan (Israel stopped Syria from conqueroring Jordan keep in mind, Syria invaded and occupied Lebanon, and Lebanon had a 15 year civil war. All of this chaos without Israel or the plight of the Palestinans lending a hand. Has Israel increased tensions? Probably. Would things be better if Israel wasn't there? I doubt it. If not for Israel, Egypt and Syria would still be Russian sattelites, egypt's repeated beatings lead it to change to the US side/another chilling scenario is if no Israel existed perhaps with Russian help Nasser would have conquerored the entire middle east. The added Russian influence would mean Russian advisers, weapons, possibly even nuclear weapons. I suspect this would cause the US to have to compensate giving saudi arabia and jordan more weapons and a horrible conflict would just be waiting to happen without zionism, go figure.
