The irony of "tefiillingate" is that the 2 girls who are wearing tefillin at SAR, the modern Orhtodox school that set off the tefillin hysteria come from Conservative homes. This is a fact and I know because I am a parent at the school. The parents of one of the girls are both Conservative Rabbis and that the other girl belongs to a Conservative Synogouge and went to a Conservative day school befor coming to SAR.They are not Orthodox. None of the Orhtodox girls at the school are wearing them and this is a modern school. FYI I do believe it's halachicly permitted but the truth is that the vast majority of Orthodox Women have no desire to take on this mitzvah. No, I am not a self hating woman. I participate in women's tefilla, my oldest daughter leined for her bat mitzvah and my next one will also next fall. I also consider myself a feminist. This has issue has been hijacked by both the left and right.
