It is a fact that Iran is totaly isolated and encircled. Arab Gulf regimes feel menaced and challenged by Iran. They would do everything to help destory it or at least contain it> They did that early on when Saddam volunteered to start a war that went on for 8 years. They paid every penney they saved and borrowed heavily to sustan that effort. The West was happy and helped too. This time there a saddam-like in Israel that is willing to go to war and bring Iran's regime to its knee, while taking Iran to the stone age. Despite all fanfares about military successes and inventions, Iran is still a 3rd world country deprived of many basic resources. It might not be as easy adventure as against Saddam, but Iran is isolated and internally divided. The best thing the regime could do for its survival is to come down to earth. They should work hard to dissipate the fears of its arab neighbors. After all they were happy with the Shah who disdain them and menaced them repeatedly. This can be done because Arabs have diverging immediate goals and focuses. But the most urgent and vital step for Iran survival as a nation is to avoid Israel and Western mighty revenges. For that it should make clear that its Arab and Turkish neighbors do not allow a strick and invasion from their soils and spaces. Making an atomic bomb may be a short cut and a sure shield to keep all enemies at bays. Look at North Korea.
