i'm aware that the current leader of iran--i refer to the grand ayatollah, not his sock puppet president--is insane. but i have been reading a lot about iran's very recent past lately and i get the perhaps foolhardy notion that not all hope is lost for iran. the previous two presidents before this one were pretty moderate, and there were a lot of protests when the current president gained re-election. the younger generation is much more liberal than the older generation. AND, the only reason the older generation is so conservative is because of the unprovoked, us-backed iraqi invasion of iran in the 80s that killed hundreds of thousands of innocent iranians. as a good jewish girl, i never even knew this war existed. but now i understand why iranians are so wary of the us (and its new best friend, israel). and when iran becomes more moderate again, which i DO believe will happen, syria and the saudis will probably follow. so i think there is a chance that the region will not descend into some nuclear hell, despite what the media says. i know that iran and co pose a threat to israel and i don't deny that, but i think that perhaps we should spend a bit more time realizing WHY this is the case (beyond "all muzlimz r evil, lol").
