One of the tidbits you get from the guides who take you on the extention of the Western Wall is that the neighborhood "above you" is the Moslem Quarter that was built sometime in the ninth century in order to . . . make the rest of the Western Wall invisible to the rest of the world. Fortunately, the engineers of those days were more skillfull than the archeologists of our time and the houses built in that neighborhood have withstood the test of time. Yes Virginia, the Arabs who built their houses kitty corner from the City of David knew what they were doing--making that evidence of Jewish history unavailable to the rest of the world. And yes, they were squatting on land that was sacred to Jews, as they have been doing all along.
