They like to enquire, are interested in what groups like Hamas have to say. They do not necessarily take its charter at face value, like most of the Talkbackers here, who appear to loathe intellectual exercise and prefer to hide behind the facile slogans. With Fatah already realizing that there is nothing to gain from the coming shambolic 'peace conference' there is no alternative to restart the dialogue with Hamas and make national unity a priority. Israeli intellectuals also conclude that the only way forward is a cease-fire and dialogue with Hamas. For those interested in some intellectual pursuit I would recommend Azzam Tamimi's new book "Hamas. Unwritten chapters" (Hurst & Company, London 2007). Gabriel Rifkind, Specialist in Conflict Resolution and Human Security: "This is an important book, and I encourage both Israelis and diaspora Jews to read it". Wouldn't it be great for all of us to have an informed opinion?
