I agree...I hope some day we do become like Israel in those respects....but our history, especially our recent history, makes it that we unfourtinatly r not ready to once more contribute to the world positively...democracy is more than just getting the vote (with the most likely outcome being a mediveal Islamic leader) it's responsibility, respect for individual rights, protection of minorities, separation of religion and state...all concepts still not embraced or understood by the people unless they are enforced by force....and I won't argue that Syria doesn't sometimes act like a spoiled kid in the region...but it's behavior isn't entirely illogical and it's demands not unreasonable (yeah I'm talking bout the golan)...
