well, each side has a point; on one side about 50% heavy assimilation in the Diaspora, on the other about the same 50% of 'hebrew speaking goyim' in Israel. Yehoshua's remarks shows the gap that is being created between Israel and Diaspora without recognizing the merits and the support for each other. By the way, many Israelis think like Yehoshua even though they do not say it. Flying to Israel once, some young professionals asked me in the face how are things with assimilation - they were very astonished when I told them about my Jewish life in the USA (again not everybody is involved) compared with the Jewish life they do in Israel when today some do not even watch the news anymore and live a 100% secular life like in the west.
