Jewish history may be emotionally deadening, but given a great national project, the individual may transcend his/her pain. David Ben-Gurion did not wallow in pain. He devoted his life to creating a state for the Jews. Today's settlers are also not wallowing in pain. Although I think their project is harmful to the Jews, they think otherwise and are happily crazy. Holocaust survivors and their children should also join some larger movement and find satisfaction there. I can't help Nicole Krauss if she chooses to live in the US and rely on her own resources. Let her consider her pain sort of "self-inflicted".
