America will do anything it wants as long as it serves the best interests of the USA. What is so difficult to understand about this ? Today?s enemies are tomorrows friends and visa versa. We provided secret protection and support to former Nazi officials and Nazi collaborators after WWII because it served the best interests of our Intelligence community. Prior to 1979, we supported Iran. After 1979 we supported Iraq. When the commies were occupying Afghanistan, we supported (you might even say created) the Taliban. Israel no longer has the strategic value that it once provided the US during the Cold War. With AIPAC now in the hot seat and at least a million and a half less Jews in this country since the 1960s due to assimilation, Israel will have to finally learn to stand on her own.
