If they're fielded, and if the system responds only to those projectiles headed for population centers or strategic sites it will look bad and invite Hamas and IJ to fire *more* missiles in an attempt to overwhelm the system. That will result in increased pressure on the IDF to respond - at a time when, for political reasons, it is only inclined to "proportional" or limited retaliation. In the end, Israel will relearn an old lesson - that the best defense is a good offense. As it is, aggression from Gaza is virtually cost-free - except for Israel which carries the cost through such systems as Iron Dome. A more aggressive, disproportionate response, will take the war back to those who seem to want it - Hamas and IJ.
