I grew up in the US, in upstate New York, having to "pledge allegiance to the flag" and with assembly (including every baseball game) sing the national anthem. These actions were essential parts of my childhood education and a core of the national culture. Protesting these activities would be likely been considered treason by the community. Yet, somehow, our Israeli citizens are embarrassed or offended by our flag or our anthem. This is not only sad, but an embarrasment to the words of the Israeli anthem itself. Nobody in America had to believe the government was perfect, but we pledged the ideals of the country. We, Israeli citizens, should and ought to do the same.
