A big rift between the west and Turkey occurred in 1975 when Turkey invaded Cyprus. Turkey is looking for zero problems with neighbors, but the same problems are still there. I think the west was using entry in to the EU as a carrot; however, it seems Turkey today, doesn't want to join the European community as much as it did in the past, nor does Europe fully accept them. Turkey probably will find the path to compromise, it they think ties to the west will help Turkey's prosperity.
