the legitimacy of the occupation is a different story, basic laws and ethics were raped, and history books too. the fact that you have the word 'narrative' is an insult to all historians who spent their lives studying and refining what really happened. and its written in books. credible books, which are available worldwide. however they are never quoted or mentioned in the media. and media always refers back to non credible 'narratives' which is nothing more than 'what they say has happened' and the funnier bit is, this narrative is routinely recited by people who had no idea where the middle east was 20 years ago.
