Israel has been lucky so far that Goldstone’s op-ed has escaped the world’s attention. But first Perez and now the Jewish lobby are making sure that it gets into the headlines. World opinion will not see Goldstone’s musings the way Israel claims they are. They will become aware of the personal and religious harassment he has endured, and which was the real cause he revisited the issue. Israel’s culpability will become known, and the Jewish community’s methods of dealing with dissent will be exposed. People will ask: If this is how they treat their own dissenters, how do they treat the Arab citizens of Israel? How do they treat the Arabs under their military rule? It is not a pretty picture for Israel and its lobby. The overriding urge to impose their will with total disregard to consequences, the ruthless use of their global reach and manipulative power, shows a love of control for the sake of control. I wouldn’t reinforce this profile.
