    You'll find that it was Israel who broke a subtle 'unofficial' understanding, wherein it recognized that attacks were being carried out by elements which Hamas could not completely control, despite it efforts, and - as a concession to this - was therefore aiming its retaliatory strikes at material targets such as empty buildings, tunnels, etc. However...following immediately following the settler murders, the IDF's retaliation turned directly against Hamas. This is what led to Hamas firing its own rockets into Israel for the first time since Cast Lead, and the escalation was on. Israel is continuing that escalation, especially with this latest assassination under the trumped up guise that they plotting terror attacks over the holidays, because its extremely unlikely the IDF would really know that, which means it's being used as justification. And there's no secret WHY it suits Israel to escalate tensions, is there? I think some people are calling it "Black Semptember".
