The author says: "Nusseibeh brings up a number of (admittedly ) unpleasant biblical quotations. Yet it is difficult to see the relevance of this to the political and legal realities of present-day Israel as a modern democratic nation-state, in which human and civil rights are anchored in legislation and in the judicial system." --> thus, it follows that we should also stop using biblical texts to award Jews the "promised land" as the "people of the covenant" and instead concentrate on the modern nation state and the status of human rights within it.
