If the US wanted to bring about peace between Israel and the Palestinians it could have done so a long time ago. As the chief political, economic and defense sponsor of Israel, the US should take responsibility for its failure in the Arab world and indirectly for the tens if not hundreds of thousands of Arabs and Israelis who died due to the continued conflict. The US, which is the only country on the UN Security Council that can make a resolution stick, has consistently failed to implement one single resolution. The US and the interest of both Israel and the Arabs always succumbed to the interest of those who thrive on the conflict in the US. Israel with its warmonger mentality thought it can get away with it. The Palestinian leadership throughout its 40 years history is unfit to lead, and incompetent to act, and too corrupt to look after the interest of the people. We can only hope that President George W. Bush will have the courage to make his words stick and bring about peace. He should not count on Sharon or Abbas to bring about peace. One is hostage to a messianic Zionism that does not see room for two people and the other is so inept he could not bring about a simple change in the security forces and is held hostage by Arafat loyalists and thugs. Abbas is too weak to make a decision on what to have for breakfast.
