I know enough about jewish history to understand the security concern of Israel. Even after more than 60 years the state is not fully consolidated and is still confronting various radical organisations that want it destroyed. One can see the fight against Hamas as a legitime act of selfdefence against an terrorist opponent that on a regular basis launches rockets into the south of the country. Every governemt has the right to defend its citizens. But te core problem is of course the resistance to the occupation. In Europe I have seen the image of Israel deteriorate year after year. In discussions i always defend the right of israel to exist as a jewish state but the PR war has long been lost. The image of a boy trowing stones at an armoured vehicle is far too powerful. I see more and more opposition to the expansion of settlements on the Westbank. So, i say this with much love for Israel: remove the core problem from the ME imbroglio, stop the expansion of the settlements and withdraw from the westbank. The idea of a greater Israel is no longer feasible. The international community wont allow it. The continuation of the present policy will leave Israel with no friends, for even the US will eventually find the price to pay too high. Time is running out in a ME with nuclear foes. Leaving the Westbank will not answer all arab demands but Israel will regain the moral high ground. The occupation shall no longer be the political justification for terror acts and opposition against the state of Israel.
