I never know what people mean when they talk about wanting to flatten or in this case "wipe Gaza clean?" Do they want to kill its almost two million inhabitants? Do they want to carpet-bomb all its buildings and infrastructure to rubble (which would lead to the death of most of its inhabitants anyway)? Or do they simply want to get rid of all its missiles, launchers and other military hardware? How many civilians is it acceptable to kill in doing this - or is the answer as many as it takes? I absolutely don't understand how wiping Gaza clean - whatever that actually means - will benefit Israel in anything but the very short term? If anything, any mass destruction of the place and its civilians is surely only likely to lead to a much wider conflict in the region whose outcome might be disastrous for Israel.
