Turkey has never acted like an independent mediator with Syria. When Olmert let Turkey do the talking the Turks were basically saying to Olmert give Assad anything he demands so they have never been much use to Israel as mediators. The only reason people got killed on that trip is because they decided to have a showdown with the soldiers who came aboard armed with paintball guns as their primary weapon. Before they ship left Turkey they were told they would not be allowed to enter Gaza waters and so not to come. Israel had the right to board that ship in international waters under the Helsinki Principles which allows the boarding of a ship in international waters if there is reason to believe its going to attempt to breach a blockade and they organizers of this little cruise said from the start this was about breaking the blockade. Israel offered to let them dock in Ashdod and then deliver the goods by road after it had been checked but they refused. I am not going to let the government waste my hard earned tax money to compensate idiots who decided to go on a cruise and many of whom took part in the violence. We do not owe Turkey an apology and we don't owe anybody compensation.... The only people the government owe apologies & compensation to are the poor soldiers who took part in this raid and were injured due to the fact they were ordered to board the ship with paintball guns rather than rubber bullets and tear gas.
