"in fact, prior to the introduction of monotheism there were never any wars in the name of god or gods, people were more tolerant." - Corrector Actually, wars were sponsored (supposedly) by the national gods, and a win could (and was) interpreted as a victory of one god over the other. Sometimes, in defeat, it was understood that the god wanted to punish his people. (An Assyrian example comes to mind.) Wars are a human endeavor, not a divine endeavor, so wars were here even before the gods or God. If you want to claim that the bible has many phrases that indicate that other gods were viewed as real, indeed this is the case. Monotheism took hold only after the Return from Babylon (538 BCE) so older documents incorporated into the bible still show other gods as extisting.
