Those who know the Algerians, would know they are very tolerant and open minded. The proximity of Algeria to Europe and historical ties with it, made Algeria and North Africa all too distinct from the rest of the Arab world (in fact, it would be fair to say that North Africa is probably overwhermingly Berber and co-existence of ethnic groups is a model to others). The remarks made by this Minister only concern him and are not a reflection of what the people or even the government at large think. Algeria has exceptional relations with Europe, the US and the rest of the world. It is true that most Jews left Algeria the day it became independent (I have already explained the reasons why they left - but they were not expelled as some propagandists claim). However, there is still a substantial Jewish community in Algeria. The ex-Finance minister was in fact an Algerian Jew. So, people should not generalise.
