A few years ago, a professor at the University of Colorado was famously fired - many said because of his controversial statements. Upon further inspection, however, it was found that he was a horrible academic with a history of lying and plagiarism. While I'm absolutely not saying that that's necessarily the case here, just remember that there's a lot more to university politics than controversy over externally political subjects.
