I know that militaries everywhere retain religious people to maintain morale, but this is not helpful. If taken seriously---and a position of Chief Rabbi ought to suggest that---this would mean that the IDF could only be "the most moral army in the world" by being the most utterly merciless. Maimonides, who was Salah al-Din's personal physician, believed in and recommended the discriminating and sometimes downright kind approach to warfare that was practiced by his noble Muslim employer. I doubt that he would be pleased with the selective use that the IDF's Chief Rabbi Rontzki makes of his words.
