It is still too early to decide with certainty the US's motives. But assuming that the motives were to promote Hamas as a counter-weight to Fatah for the purpose of jettisoning the UN bid, I would hardly call it fatal. This was a tactical victory for Hamas and would not compare at all with the victory which Palestinians expect at the UN and ICC. It would not undermine Abu Mazin’s efforts let alone negate them. If Abu Mazin plays the UN card well, Hamas would have to come to terms with him and accept the PLO charter or else risk losing hold of Gaza.
