"so your talk about syria needing to protect its flank is plain ignorance." - hussain There are those in the IDF predicting an attack on Syria this year. This was covered here in Haaretz as well as other Israeli press sources. I ALWAYS look at everyone's strategic situation in evaluating their needs and actions. Syria has quite inferior armed forces compared to Israel. Their left flank is protected by Jordan. Their right by Hizbollah. This is the situation as it appears from Syria. The Syrian army does not have a particularly good track record in fighting the IDF. Any leader of Syria would have to consider the situation as threatening. Israel refuses to discuss peace. The United States threatens attack. The IDF seems to think a war is inevitable this year. Exactly how would you respond if you were running Syria? Israel and the U.S. are led by leaders who believe in preemption. Preemption is a nice word for aggression. Exactly whom has Syria attacked in the last 34 years?
