A senior western diplomate? If no name and title is mentioned, this news item is meaningless. The senior diplomate surely realises that 18 years of negotiations passed without any results. The best chance was achieved with Ehud Olmert, but Netanyahu chose to torpedo all that was achieved. Netanyahu was the Israeli prime minister who opposed Oslo and undermined the agreements first in 1996. As for going to the UN to claim overdue Palestinian statehood, this is a Palestinian must regardless of the consequences. It is advised the Israeli public and government grab the opportunity while Abbas is in power and make peace with him. This should work and would prevent future esclation with a very angry Arab and Muslim worlds. Vetoeing the UN recognition by the US will be damaging to all, particularly to the USA.
