For years, Israel has been scared of taking too drastic action in fear of "humiliating" the Palestinians and other surrounding neighbours. The truth is, that while diplomatic negotiations have been and will continue to be the only thing that leads to long term change in the Middle East, these negotiations don't happen for no reason (i.e. out of pure goodwill and desire for peace). They have historically been precipitated by a major humiliation in a war by Israel. It is what lead to the peace agreement with Egypt and also with Jordan (albeit with a 20 year delay in that case). It is also what will be necessary to ensure that the Palestinians of today don't have dillusions of grandeur of being able to defeat Israel with terrorism. In retrospect, this is the mistake Israel made by withdrawing from Lebanon in the manner that they did. So here's to humiliating a new generation of friendly neighbours in the hope of bringing long term peace!
