You run into your dear friend's house. A flood is rising, soon to overwhelm the place. Your friend is inside, trying to protect her possessions. You try to pull her out to higher ground. She kicks, bites, screams---"what are you doing? How dare you try to take me away from all these treasures that I've spent so many years acquring and beautifying and making part of my life! I'll be left with nothing! Let me take my chances; I'm sure the flood won't get this high. God will protect me!" At this point, the only thing you can do is drag your kicking and screaming friend out of her house and let her possessions. She's irrational, focused on material things when her life is at stake. Its worth making her hate you if that's what it takes to save her life. For the metaphorically challenged: flood=Palestinian population; possessions=settlements.
