My sister had a civil ceremony when she married a non-Jew but the newly weds also also received a blessing from a Rabbi from the same synagogue. It meant a great deal to her - by the way she was raised in Israel and served in the army - it showed that her husband respected her Jewish heritage, and it meant a great deal to our father who gave his daughter his full support but was also pleased that on her wedding day both she and her husband wanted to acknowlege her Jewishness.
