Everybody knows it is in Israels interest to avoid peace. The two main reasons for this are that Israel would be faced with resettling a lot of settlers and Israel would have serious trouble with the militant right wing Israelis, mainly the settlers and their supporters. This is a battle that Israel doesn't want to fight. At the same time, Israel can't simply reject the pressure from the quartet. Israels usual game consists of appearing to cooperate with the American peace initiatives while covertly placing major obstacles in the way. For Israel it is always a waiting game and they can always wait out the American president if necessary. This will be more of the same. Obama has given Israel a major head start in avoiding peace. That plus a two year deadline puts him nearly on the sidelines and Israel gets a new start with a new administration. WIll Obama be back? I doubt it. I know that I won't be campaigning for him again.
