The whole point of an academic finding is that it is based on the best understanding of the evidence. This is not to say that such a finding can't be in error, but that a public retraction of such a claim can only be based on of two rationales: One the academics was faulty (perhaps deliberately so) as in Teddy Katz's claims about Tantura, or new findings subsequent to the research require correcting the record. So Prof. Toaff? Were you either negligent and sloppy or were you caught in a lie?
