Just returned from first visit to J'lem. Obstacle-rich side trip to Bethlehem revealed stupidity of division -- it will ruin the business. The tourism business is of exceptional value. Israel must have defensible boundaries since cannot rely on other side to keep a deal. All embassies to Israel are in Tel Aviv. J'lem is crowded enough without two sets of embassies, two sets of govt buildings. Idea: Each side can say "J'lem is my capital", but Palestinians should make Ramallah admin capital with all embassies there, and Israel should keep Tel Aviv similarly, with perhaps a Pal'n ver of Knesset in J'lem for balance. Israel has to maintain security and admin control of the city, both to keep suicide bombers out of the J neighborhoods, and above all to make sure the tourism business is cultivated. Israel should then write be able to write big profit-sharing checks to the Palestinian govt., to do with as they see fit -- help the citizens or fill numbered accounts. Palestinians should encourage this and help attract the billion Mu$lim tourists to add to the billion Christians. Follow the money, make more of it, that's the key to lasting peace.
