We all know the horrific history of the Catholic Church. The Church has taken extensive measures to display its remorse toward Jews and other groups it has persecuted in the past. Moreover it has stopped persecuting them. The Church no longer proselytizes Jews. It no longer issues indulgences (although this is also an internal matter). It no longer claims juridical authority over anyone. It no longer seeks to conquer the world. It is no longer interested in any of those things. And yet those who disdain the Church continue to portray it as a monstrous organization. And the Jewish tradition of remembering wrongs done against its people, however well-intentioned, has had the unintended consequence of demonizing those who are no longer guilty of any such persecution.
