Actually, the height of the racial problems stemming from the ban on people of African descent not being allowed to hold the priesthood within the LDS (Mormon) Church was in 1973. This was when one the students from Colorado State University threw a Molotov cocktail at the visiting BYU basketball team. While several of the LDS Presidents wanted this restriction to be removed, this was not allowed until 5 years later in 1978. Obviously, outside pressure had little to do with this decision.
