Another way of looking at what is happening is that Obama is orchestrating the whole soap opera. Every one is now expecting the Arabs to go for the unilateral solution in February. Would they do that without a wink and a nudge from the US? I doubt it. Abbas owes his position to the Americans and the Israelis (let us not forget that). Egyptian officialdom since Sadat has always stood for the principal that the US holds 97% of the cards, and Mubarak would be the last type to abandone that principal. Abd Allah of Jordan would never cross the British. Abd Allah of Saudi Arabia is probably the most independent of them (because his country is so filthy rich), but the US connection is too precious for him. These people would never antagonize America. What I think we are going to see is that Obama will step in at the last minute (that being when all the world except the US, Canada, and Mexico had recognized Palestine within the 1967 borders). He will step in with the American solution. The Palestinians will accept it immediately, the Israelis will demur a little then follow suit. The "American solution" will be very much like the solution hammered out by Palestinian and Israeli technocrats quite a while ago. It has all been such a waste of time.
